MRC Song

Bulan Sabit Merah Di Malaysia
Giat Berjasa Untuk Negara
Tidak Kira Kaum Dan Agama
Waktu Aman Atau Bahaya

Di Mana Jua Adanya Sengsara
Di Sana Ada Kita
Di Darat Dan Laut Kita Bersedia
Walaupun Diancam Bahaya

Bulan Sabit Merah Gerakan Sedunia
Membantu Semua Yang Menderita
Badan Sukarela Berkhidmat
Dengan Tabah Dan Bersemangat

*Lyrics: Dato’ Dol Ramli @ Song: Dato’ Johari Salleh”Lagu Bulan Sabit Merah” – was first played in a ceremony 1975 to commemorate the change of name of the Society from the Malaysian Red Cross Society to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.

Voluntary Aid Detachment Overview

Individuals who join the Malaysian Red Crescent Society are grouped into three movement; Link, Youth and the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Links and Youth movement are for school members. The Voluntary Aid Detachment is meant for adult volunteers who have already completed their secondary school education.

A team of VAD consist of about 20-40 members and is lead by a commandant who reports to Chapter Committee. Members in the VAD consist of working individuals and students in tertiary institution. There are also a few homemakers in the VAD. The activities of VAD’s center upon more mature activities such as ambulance services, public duties & organizing events.

In summary, if an adult individual joins the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, he/she will be placed in a Voluntary Aid Detachment.

VAD membership

Membership to the Voluntary aid Detachment is open to everyone above the 18 years of age. Individuals could choose to join any of the VAD’s available in Penang Branch, be it in Seberang Prai or Island. There is no age limit to becoming a VAD member.

Each VAD have their own specialty and expertise. The VAD’s have means to organize their own activities, therefore creating a niche among themselves.

Activities

VAD activities are more mature and advanced in nature as compared the youth and link movement. Activities carried out by VAD members are such as
  • Ambulance service
  • Disaster Relief
  • Community Service

On top of that, VAD members has been known to organize community oriented programs which is more suited for the community. As adults, VAD members has networking skills, awareness and maturity level to reach out to more people in the community than the youth or link members. VAD members also bring along professional experience and know into the Malaysian Red Crescent Society to enable value added services to the Society.

Benefits

Voluntary Aid Detachment members receive advanced training on first aid. These training are such as Basic Life Support which requires the participant to handle advanced medical equipment. VAD members are also given training on Ambulatory Services which enables them to drive the ambulance.

Being a member of VAD opens up the possibility for an individual to network and learn from each other. VAD members consist of individuals from various walks of life who share the same common interest of serving the community. Being a member of the VAD allows you to be different yet share the same cause.

If you were previously from the youth movement, the Voluntary Aid Detachment allows you to continue your service after leaving school. This will ensure that you do not waste away your experience and knowledge that you have gained during your service in the youth movement.
Being in the VAD also gives you the opportunity to be a leader in the Malaysian Red Crescent Society. Many VAD members have moved on to become Chapter and Branch committee members.

About Malaysian Red Crescent

Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) has its beginnings in 1948 as branches of the British Red Cross Society in Sabah and Sarawak (then British North Borneo). In the 1950s the British Red Cross Society further established Branches in the other parts of Malaysia starting in Penang in 1950, and later in the other States.

Upon Malaya’s independence in 1957, the Branches in Peninsular Malaysia were organized as the Federation of Malaya Red Cross Society, which later was statutorily incorporated by the Federation of Malaya Red Cross Society (Incorporation) Act, 1962. MRCS received official recognition as an independent National Society from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on 4th July 1963 and accordingly was admitted as a member of the International League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on 24th August 1963.

When Malaysia was formed in September 1963, an Act to incorporate the Federation of Malaya Red Cross Society and the Branches of the Red Cross Society in Sabah and Sarawak under the name of the “Malaysian Red Cross Society” was endorsed by Parliament vides the Malaysian Red Cross Society (Incorporation) Act 1965. In 1975, the Malaysian Parliament passed the Malaysian Red Cross Society (Change of Name) Act which received Royal Assent on 21st August 1975 and subsequently gazetted on 4th Sept 1975 and is currently being enforced.

MRCS is presently one of 181 National Societies worldwide members of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). MRCS runs programs and activities in accordance to the spirit and requirement of its Incorporation Act and the Fundamental Principles of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Today the organization of MRCS comprises of the National Council, the National Executive Board, the Branches, the Chapters and the Subsidiary Units, namely Red Crescent Links in primary schools, Junior Red Crescent in secondary schools and Voluntary Aid Detachments (for members above 18 years old).

The National Executive Board at its 220th meeting on 3rd August 2002 appointed 14 National Committees covering the portfolios of Ambulance Service, Administration and Personnel, Awards, Blood Program, Building, Disaster Management, Finance, Health and Community Services, Information and Fund Raising, International Humanitarian Law and Legal Affairs, International Relations, Tender, Training and Youth.

The National Committees implement their programs and activities through the organizational support of 15 Branches (States) and 148 Chapters (Districts). As of 8th May 2004 MRCS has 290,832 registered members.
